Frequently Asked Questions
What is a prescription?
A prescription is a written instruction from your veterinary surgeon to Equine Health Direct explaining which medicine your animal requires. It also explains the dosage and the route by which the medicine must be administered. It will also give us your details and your animals details.
Do I need a prescription to buy any product on Equine Health Direct?
No you do not. You only need a prescription to buy Prescription Only Medicine (POM-V). You will see this symbol next to any product that requires a prescription.
Can I return prescription only medicines?
We do not accept returns of prescription only medicine for any reason. The VMD have strict regulations about dispensing of medicines. Your veterinary surgeon will be able to dispose of any unwanted or unused medicines.

How can I officially report a suspected problem, side effect or lack of effect regarding a medicine I have used?
On very rare occasions a side effect, or other adverse response, will result from the use of medication in your animal. It is very important that you report such events so that they may be assessed and acted on. This is the best way for a potential problem to be sorted out for the benefit of all animals in future. Anyone can report a suspected adverse reaction (vet, nurse, animal owner or keeper, etc) from this page on the VMD website.
Where can I find information about Authorised Medications?
Information about all medicines authorised for use in the UK can be found in the form of a “Summary of Product Characteristics” (SPC) on the VMD website. Follow this link to be taken to the page where you can search their database for the SPC using the brand name of the medicine you are interested in. This is in addition to the product datasheet which can be found under the description of the product on the Equine Health Direct website.
